THANDISWA TAMIA NGUBO: A RISING STAR FROM EMAKHUZENI TO THE DUT CSERI COHORT

Thandiswa Tamia Ngubo is a trailblazing entrepreneur revolutionizing the business landscape. The young, fearless and black female entrepreneur was born in the rural village of Emakhuzeni, Springvalley, Ixopo in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Thandiswa’s journey is a testament to determination and resilience. She is currently incubated at the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (DUTCSERI).

Thandiswa   completed her early education at Dowdle Primary School, Mazongo Primary School, and Umlazi Commercial High School before pursuing a qualification in Public Finance and Accounting at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) from 2019 to 2022. Motivated by her passion to combat South Africa’s unemployment challenges, she founded The Bistro Group, originally known as The Beach Bistro. The company has since diversified its offerings to include accommodation, decor and catering services, romantic indoor and outdoor setups, and children’s party planning.

With a clear vision to create job opportunities for youth and empower them toward a brighter future, Thandiswa’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship and innovation. The Bistro Group now employs five people, three in permanent roles and two students working weekends.

She expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Centre, her supportive family, and her devoted life partner, whose unwavering encouragement has strengthened her resilience and fueled her success in the demanding world of entrepreneurship. “As a young female business owner, I’ve faced skepticism. There were instances where I had to ask my partner to represent himself as the owner or director, just to be taken seriously.”

“I first learned about this incubation programme at the Sebenza Women Award ceremony, where I was chosen as one of five entrepreneurs to participate. The programme has been instrumental in helping me refine my business model, address tax and financial challenges, and make more informed business decisions. I’m now more confident, cautious, and equipped for sustainable growth.”-added Thandiswa

Despite these challenges, Thandiswa remains hopeful and shares inspiring moments. “Programs like this have been transformative,” she says. In the future, Thandiswa plans to expand The Bistro Group by opening additional branches and creating more employment opportunities for young people.

“I’m experiencing personal growth and moving towards financial independence. I’ve recently founded a women’s support network, the EmpowerHER SA movement, and I’m hopeful it will continue to grow and bring healing in the coming years.”

To aspiring female entrepreneurs, Thandiswa offers this message: “IT IS POSSIBLE! If I, a small-town girl from Emakhuzeni, can chase my dreams, so can you! I’m not yet where I want to be, but I’ve learned that perseverance and staying true to your purpose make all the difference.”
