In the bustling world of entrepreneurship, finding a place to call home is often a challenge. However, for Spot on Fire, a leading fire protection company with over 40 years of experience, that challenge was met with an exhilarating opportunity through the CSERI Incubation Programme.
Founded with a mission to save lives and protect valuable assets from fire-related incidents, Spot on Fire has been a trusted name in the fire protection industry. Offering a wide range of SABS and SAQCC approved fire protective equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, hydrants, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, and water tanks, the company has consistently delivered top-notch products and services.
But Spot on Fire wanted to do more than just provide fire protection solutions. They aimed to educate the public about the causes of fire and how to prevent it. With this vision in mind, they sought to expand their reach and impact, which led them to the CSERI Incubation Programme.
When asked about the idea behind joining the programme, Mr. Nene, the CEO of Spot On Fire, expressed his enthusiasm, “Before I joined the DUT CSERI, my company’s turnover was very low. However, during the programme, my company’s turnover increased significantly. They supported and guided us to achieve more sales, and with their ongoing support, we are now ambitious enough to grow our revenue.”
Thanks to the programme, Spot on Fire has experienced remarkable growth. From having just two employees, the company now proudly employs 13 individuals, with six permanent and seven part-time staff members. The CSERI Incubation Programme played a pivotal role in enhancing Mr. Nene’s leadership skills, and through the SEDA incubations and the Cataler programme, Spot on Fire expanded its network and gained exposure to various procurement solutions.
One such solution that significantly contributed to the business’s growth was the SCNet system, a platform that provides secure online quote management technology, assisting buyers in discovering credible and empowered suppliers. Mr. Nene emphasized, “This system played a huge role in my business growth, and as Spot On Fire, we will be forever grateful for the opportunity from the CSERI Rapid Incubator.”
The CSERI Incubation Programme has not only provided growth opportunities but also created a safe space for entrepreneurs like Mr. Nene to learn and thrive. The comprehensive trainings offered by the programme have empowered him with essential skills, including effective pitching to potential investors and clients, understanding legal obligations to regulatory bodies such as SARS, DOL, and UIF, and the significance of maintaining accurate records.
When asked about his advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, Mr. Nene passionately shared, “They need to build themselves up and be hungry to learn and grow their entrepreneurial skills. Seek advice from other successful entrepreneurs and stay updated with quality news and resources that will improve their decision-making abilities. I highly recommend subscribing to renowned business websites such as HBR, Incafrica, Forbes, PWC, KPMG, and Ernst and Young to stay informed about the future and direction of their businesses.”
He further emphasized the importance of visibility and networking, stating, “Be visible and wear your company brand when attending meetings or trainings. Collaborate with fellow entrepreneurs and participate in networking events to expand your network. Find a reputable mentor who can hold you accountable and provide valuable guidance. And lastly, never shy away from seizing opportunities to promote yourself and your business.”
As Spot on Fire continues to flourish under the wings of the CSERI Incubation.
