INNOVATE TO ELEVATE: DUT CSERI  EMPOWERS ENTREPRENEURS WITH DESIGN THINKING MASTERCLASS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Centre for Social Entrepreneurship recently held a Design Thinking workshop on July 10th, aimed at empowering budding entrepreneurs with innovative problem-solving skills. The session was led by Business Development Officer, Ms. Brightness Nyawose, who guided the incubates through the five critical stages of the Design Thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Ms. Nyawose also facilitated an engaging exercise that encouraged participants to introduce themselves, share one truth, one lie, and one personal achievement. The activity allowed them to view problems from fresh perspectives, driving home the importance of creativity and adaptability in entrepreneurship.

In her presentation, Ms. Nyawose emphasized that entrepreneurs must constantly adapt to change and embrace the power of innovation to thrive in today’s competitive market.

The five steps of Design Thinking were broken down for the attendees as follows, empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test. These steps, Ms. Nyawose explained, are meant to equip entrepreneurs with a framework for innovation, encouraging them to approach challenges with fresh eyes and creativity.

One of the participants, Mr. Phakamani Ndlovu, Founder and Director of Phakamani Empowerment, expressed his appreciation for the workshop. “Through this program, I have learned a lot about running my business and correcting past mistakes. Today’s Design Thinking session taught me how to find solutions and take action.”

The Centre for Social Entrepreneurship looks forward to seeing these entrepreneurs apply the Design Thinking process, revitalizing their businesses with newfound insights and innovative approaches.
