Durban University of Technology (DUT) alumnus, Chef Philani Ncube, has taken the catering industry by storm with his multiservice catering company, Bon Appetit Foods. Offering a wide range of services that guarantee excellence, Ncube’s venture goes beyond traditional catering, catering to domestic and corporate events, as well as commercial establishments like cafeterias, canteens, cooperative businesses, bakeries, and decor and catering events.
Having graduated from DUT’s after completing his Hospitality qualification, Ncube wasted no time in pursuing his passion. In 2019, he ventured into the catering industry, and in 2020, he found his path converging with the DUT Centre for Social Entrepreneurship Incubation Rapid Incubator (CSERI).
“It is both an honor and a privilege to be part of the DUT CSERI Incubator,” Ncube expressed with gratitude. “The incubator has been our lifeline at Bon Appetit Foods, offering invaluable support in enhancing our business compliance, establishing robust systems and processes, and guiding us in innovative marketing techniques to boost sales.”
Through the incubator, Ncube’s company has experienced a significant transformation. Bon Appetit Foods has expanded its team, seizing the opportunity to hire six full-time staff members. Additionally, the incubator has provided numerous platforms for exposure, including exhibitions, radio interviews, and newspaper features. Participation in specialized programs such as the Sekela Hospitality Support Program and the KZN Social Economy Development Program has further contributed to the rebranding and growth of the business.
“I must extend my heartfelt appreciation to DUT CSERI for opening our eyes to the various opportunities available to small businesses,” Ncube continued. “Without their guidance and support, we would not have progressed to the extent we have. We are proud to call ourselves one of their success stories.”
Looking ahead, Ncube envisions an even brighter future for Bon Appetit Foods. His dreams encompass owning a franchise, establishing a bakery, and founding a food and beverage training academy. With the unwavering support of the DUT CSERI Program, Ncube is confident that these aspirations will soon become a reality.
As a testament to his journey, Ncube eagerly shares his advice with fellow entrepreneurs. “Love your business and nurture it with care. Take good care of your employees, for they are the backbone of your success. Align yourself with industry bodies and constantly seek opportunities to enhance your business skills and knowledge. It is through continuous growth that we can take our businesses to new heights.”
In 2023, Bon Appetit Foods stands poised for growth and fresh opportunities, fueled by the unwavering support and guidance of the DUT CSERI Incubator. As Chef Philani Ncube and his dedicated team embark on this exciting chapter, they express their deepest gratitude to the incubator for providing them with a nurturing home for their entrepreneurial aspirations.
