CRYSTAL T. SMITH EMPOWERS ENTREPRENEURS AT DUT CENTRE WITH MASTERCLASS ON PERFECTING THE PITCH
The Durban University of Technology’s Centre for Social Entrepreneurship (DUTCSERI) recently held a transformative masterclass focused on mastering the art of pitching. Led by renowned vocal coach and public speaking expert Mrs. Crystal Smith, the session provided entrepreneurs with essential skills in voice projection, body language, and the crafting of the perfect elevator pitch.
Mrs. Smith highlighted public speaking as one of the most significant fears globally, pointing out that many individuals suffer from glossophobia—an anxiety disorder related to speaking in front of an audience. She stressed the importance of converting fear into focus, mastering body language, and adapting to the platform on which one is presenting.
“Transfer your fear into focus,” Mrs. Smith advised. “Understand what drives that fear—whether it’s concerns or limitations—and channel it constructively. Public speaking is daunting not just because we doubt our own voices but because of the fear of rejection and not being accepted. This is why it’s such a pervasive and complex fear.”
She also emphasized the impact of first impressions, noting that while they may not be lasting, they are undeniably powerful. Entrepreneurs, she suggested, must learn to maximize these moments to deliver pitches that can propel their businesses to new levels of investment, growth, and transformation.
“Success is where preparation meets opportunity,” Mrs. Smith continued. “Today, we are preparing you for the opportunities that lie ahead, ensuring that both you and your business thrive.”
In a world where appearances can be deceiving, Mrs. Smith underscored the value of authenticity. She urged entrepreneurs to remain true to themselves, find strength in their journeys, and embrace their individuality. Mastering body language, understanding personality traits in public speaking, and focusing one’s fears into productive energy were key themes of her message.
“Your voice is your power,” she stated. “Recognize that you are your greatest asset, and what you focus on will inevitably be drawn to you. Don’t misrepresent yourself; instead, believe in the power and impact of your voice. Never let any circumstance diminish your strength.”
Mrs. Smith’s parting advice was for the entrepreneurs to be comfortable with who they are, embrace their uniqueness, and own their journeys. By doing so, they are empowered to inspire and uplift others.
Now equipped with pitch-perfect skills, the entrepreneurs are set to shine on stage, ready to take their businesses to new heights.
